Log-magnitude modelling of auditory tuning curves

چکیده
In this paper, we propose the novel application of a technique for filter design that can accurately fit measured tuning curves for the auditory fibres in the log-magnitude domain. This method provides pole-zero filters with guaranteed stability, and its logmagnitude domain criterion allows tuning curves with very steep slopes to be accurately modelled with an 8 to 10 order polezero filter. Thus, this technique can also be used to design a new set of critical band filters with superior frequency domain characteristics compared with the well-known gammatone filter bank. The filter bank designed using this technique has applications in auditory-based speech and audio analysis.

The mammalian cochlea functions as a filter bank that performs a spectral, Fourier-like decomposition on the acoustic signal. While tuning can be compromised (e.g., broadened with hearing impairment), whether or not human cochlear frequency resolution can be sharpened through experiential factors (e.g., training or learning) has not yet been established. Previous studies have demonstrated sharp...
متن کاملThreshold tuning curves of chinchilla auditory nerve fibers. II. Dependence on spontaneous activity and relation to cochlear nonlinearity.
Spontaneous activity and frequency threshold tuning curves were studied in thousands of auditory nerve fibers in chinchilla. The frequency distribution of spontaneous activity rates is strongly bimodal for auditory nerve fibers with characteristic frequency <3 kHz but only mildly bimodal for the entire sample. Spontaneous activity rates and thresholds at the characteristic frequency are inverse...
متن کاملSharpening of frequency tuning by inhibition in the thalamic auditory nucleus of the mustached bat.
Unlike the quasitriangular frequency-tuning curves of peripheral neurons, pencil- or spindle-shaped frequency-tuning curves (excitatory areas) have been found in the central auditory systems of many species of animals belonging to different classes. Inhibitory tuning curves (areas) are commonly found on both sides of such "level-tolerant" sharp frequency-tuning curves. However, it has not yet b...
متن کاملAuditory filter bank design using masking curves
It is very difficult and costly to experimentally observe the motion of the basilar membrane in a fully functional cochlea with the view to obtaining amplitude response at points along the membrane. This paper presents an inexpensive method of generating psychoacoustic tuning curves from the well-known masking curves in critical band rate. We present a method for designing critical band auditor...
